Looking at the feature comparison of Wireless Dog Fences, it would seem like a “no-brainer” to opt for the Perimeter Technologies ® model. However, things are not as straight forward as they appear. PetSafe Wireless Instant Fence vs. PetSafe Stay & Play vs. Perimeter WiFi Fence

Each of the three available models have different feature sets and price points that make them more suitable for some situations than others. Before selecting the fence, we suggest you understand your selection criteria and work from there.

Other than the fact that the transmission technology is wireless, there is some common ground with all of the products, such as a circular containment pattern, one collar included, with an additional collar available for a maximum of two dogs.

Wireless Fence Selection Criteria

Select criteria can include cost, a visual display of your dog's location, the range of the unit, the potential obstructions in the containment area, the size of the dog(s) you need to contain and whether you would like a rechargeable receiver collar.

• Cost: in order of low to high, PetSafe Wireless Instant Fence, PetSafe Stay & Play, Perimeter WiFi
• Location Display: only the Perimeter model has this because the SmartTrack® technology shows you where your dog is. It's not exactly 1080p, but it works!
• Containment Range / Area: some caveats, but honors to the Perimeter model at a maximum of 2½ acres vs. ½ and ¾ for the PetSafe Wireless Instant Fence and Stay & Play respectively. Now read the next bullet, it may be important for you.
• Containment Area Obstructions: the wireless technology used by the Perimeter WiFi Fence has potentially longer range, but is much more sensitive to obstructions and signal blocks. To achieve anything like the maximum range, you need a flat, clear lot, minimum obstacles from the transmitter inside and you should place the transmitter as high as possible. The PetSafe models, and particularly the PetSafe Wireless Instant Fence, are less susceptible to signal disruption.
• Dog Size: most manufacturers claim there collars fit dogs 8lbs and up, we suggest 10 - 12lbs as the minimum. The PetSafe Stay and Play has an ultralight receiver and a narrow very adjustable strap that allows it to work on dogs down to 5lbs. Maximum size, the models are about even.
• Rechargeable Collar: both the PetSafe Stay and Play and Perimeter WiFi models have rechargeable collars. When you take the collar off the dog, put it on the (supplied) charge and it will be ready for use next time. The collar for the PetSafe Wireless Instant Fence has a replaceable battery and they will last any thing from 30 - 120 days depending on use. When they go dead, the collar stops working. (We carry the PetSafe Wireless Fence Collar Batteries, and you can get them in a couple of days).

Is a Wireless Fence Right for Me?

That's an easy question to answer: er, yeah ... maybe?! There are restrictions, but if selected appropriately, and used correctly they do work extremely well.
